Sex therapy in San Francisco
A more comfortable, fulfilling relationship with sex.
Sex is a complicated part of being human. It can be a source of pleasure, closeness, and connection, but it can also bring up frustration, anxiety, insecurity, or confusion.
Sometimes our bodies don’t respond the way we’d like. Sometimes our desire changes, or we find ourselves wanting something different from our partner. And sometimes sex just feels more complicated than we think it should.
Sex therapy offers a place to talk openly about these concerns, better understand what’s happening, and work toward a sex life that feels right for you. I provide sex therapy for individuals and/or partners.
What brings people to sex therapy?
When something about your sexual life is causing distress, affecting your relationships, or simply not working the way you’d like, it can be helpful to talk about it. Some of the concerns we might explore together include:
Low sexual desire & mismatched libidos
Feeling less interested in sex than you used to, struggling to understand changes in your sex drive, or wanting sex more or less frequently than your partner. Differences in desire are common, but they can become difficult when either person feels pressured, rejected, or misunderstood.
Sexual performance anxiety & erectile difficulties
Worrying about getting or maintaining an erection, feeling pressure to perform, or becoming so focused on what your body is doing that it’s difficult to enjoy sex. We can explore the anxiety, expectations, and relationship dynamics that may be contributing to these experiences.
Difficulty with arousal or orgasm
Having trouble becoming aroused, reaching orgasm, or feeling present during sex. These concerns can have a range of physical, psychological, and relational influences, and therapy can help us explore how those factors may be interacting.
Painful sex & discomfort with intimacy
Experiencing pain during sex, anticipating discomfort, or developing anxiety around physical intimacy. Alongside appropriate medical care, therapy can help address the emotional and relational effects of these experiences, including avoidance, fear, or tension between partners.
Sexual communication, boundaries & expectations
Finding it difficult to talk about what you want, ask for something different, set boundaries, or navigate differences in sexual preferences. We can work on making those conversations more comfortable and finding ways to approach sex with greater openness and mutual understanding.
Sexual identity, shame & self-confidence
Questioning aspects of your sexuality, feeling uncomfortable with your desires, or carrying messages about sex that make it difficult to enjoy or express yourself. Therapy can offer room to explore these experiences without assuming there’s anything inherently wrong with what you’re feeling.
These concerns don’t always fit neatly into categories, and many overlap. You also don’t need to have a diagnosable sexual dysfunction to benefit from sex therapy.
What working together looks like
My approach is straightforward, conversational, and nonjudgmental. I want you to feel comfortable being candid about what’s happening, without worrying about finding the right words or saying something embarrassing.
We’ll explore the concerns that brought you to therapy, the expectations you have around sex, and the ways your thoughts, feelings, relationships, and physical experiences may be affecting one another. And while sex can be a serious subject, I don’t believe every conversation about it has to feel serious.
Where we focus our time
For some people, our work means working through anxiety or self-consciousness. For others, it involves understanding changes in desire, improving communication with a partner, or exploring aspects of their sexuality they haven’t felt comfortable discussing elsewhere.
Sex therapy is talk therapy. It doesn’t involve sexual contact, physical examinations, or sexual activity during sessions.
Finding what feels right for you
I don’t believe there’s one right way to experience sex or intimacy.
What matters is understanding what you want, what feels right for you, and how to navigate differences or difficulties without unnecessary pressure or judgment.
