Couples & relationship therapy in San Francisco
A better understanding of each other, and yourselves.
Relationships can be one of the most rewarding parts of life, but they can also be incredibly frustrating. Even couples who care deeply about one another can find themselves having the same arguments, struggling to communicate, or feeling increasingly disconnected.
Sometimes there’s a specific issue that brings things to a head. Other times, the relationship just doesn’t feel quite like it used to. Marriage counseling or relationship therapy offers a chance to slow things down, understand what’s really happening between you, and figure out what each of you needs from the relationship.
What can couples therapy help with?
Communication & recurring conflict
Having the same argument over and over, feeling like you’re talking past one another, or struggling to bring up difficult topics without things escalating.
Emotional distance & disconnection
Feeling more like roommates than partners, missing the closeness you once had, or struggling to make time for each other.
Trust, infidelity & rebuilding a relationship
An affair, dishonesty, or another breach of trust can leave both partners unsure of what comes next. We can work through the impact of what happened, understand what led to it, and explore whether and how trust can be rebuilt after infidelity or other relationship difficulties.
Differences in sexual desire & intimacy
It’s common for partners to have different needs when it comes to sex, affection, and physical closeness. Differences in sexual desire, sometimes called mismatched libidos, can become a source of frustration, rejection, or resentment. We can talk about these differences more openly and understand what each person is experiencing.
Major life changes & competing priorities
Moving in together, getting married, having children, changing careers, or navigating family responsibilities can shift the dynamics of a relationship. Even welcome and exciting changes can create tension when partners have different expectations.
Premarital counseling & relationship decisions
Whether you’re preparing for marriage, questioning your long-term compatibility, or considering separation or divorce, therapy can help you have conversations that might otherwise feel too difficult to bring up.
Not every couple comes to therapy with the same goals. Part of our work is figuring out what each of you wants and what feels possible moving forward.
What working together looks like
Couples therapy isn’t about deciding who’s right or wrong, keeping score, or convincing one person to see things the other’s way. I want to help each of you feel better understood while also taking an honest look at the things that may need to change.
I’m interested in understanding how the two of you interact—what tends to happen when things get difficult, what each of you is trying to communicate, and where you seem to be missing each other. Our sessions are conversational and collaborative. I ask questions, share what I’m seeing, and help us slow down conversations that might otherwise turn into familiar arguments.
Where we focus our time
At times, our work means looking at patterns that have developed over years. Other times, it means addressing something very specific happening in your relationship right now.
Finding a way forward together
A common frustration in relationships is knowing that something isn’t working but not knowing how to change it.
You might both agree that communication needs to improve but still end up having the same argument every week. Or you might want to feel closer without knowing how to get past months or years of distance.
Part of our work is understanding what keeps those patterns going and finding different ways to respond to one another.
